Zhiyong is an Associate Professor (Practice),   Department of Computer Science, NUS School of Computing. He is conducting Computing Translational Research and Development, the C-TReND.

He had been working as a Senior Scientist in Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR since 2007, where he served various roles including Senior Manager, Strategic Capability Development and Industry Development, Co-Principal Investigator of SERC Industrial Robotics Programme, Department Head of Computer Graphics and Interface (CGI) and Programme Manager of SERC Human Factor Engineering (HFE). He was an Assistant Professor of NUS School of Computing and Lecturer in Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, China.

He received Ph.D. from EPFL, Switzerland in 1997, with a thesis on human animation from the Immersive Interaction Group (IIG), MEng and BEng from the CG & CAD Lab, Tsinghua University in 1988 and 1986 respectively. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor in School of Computing, NUS and serves as a PhD supervisor in NGS, NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering. His research interest is in computer graphics, large data visualization and human-robot interface.
